An ASP.NET web developer - sprinkled with WCF services and jQuery
Dan Jackson Design

Who am I?

My name is Daniel Jackson (but call me Dan).

Dan Jackson in Venice, Italy

I am an ASP.NET web developer who has been building websites for about 13 years. I dabbled in PHP for about 3 years until being offered permanent employment in my current job at South Essex College in 2010 as an ASP.NET developer.

My history of programming skills (spanning from the old DOS based Quick-Basic to C++) has allowed me to learn quickly so that I now take a lead role on in-house development projects.

Education & Progession

After successfully completing my Computing A-Level in 2003, I began a career in IT in a well-known hotel in London's famous Park Lane - assisting with development of the company's IPTV system and guest-facing network, learning about networking and infrastructure.

University

Eventually, I left the position to begin my degree in 2007, graduating with a First Class in BSc (Hons) Multimedia Computing which ranged from building simple HTML websites, to in-depth PHP and JSP driven web applications, image and photo editing, video and sound production and 3D modelling and animation.

Completed Projects

To date, my biggest achievement is taking a lead development role on a brand new in-house web application known as C_Planner.

C_Planner is a bespoke course planning and management system utilised by tutors at all of the campuses run by the college. The system provides an management system for tutors, while allowing students to view selected information, download resources and submit their assignments via the built-in assessment system. The system has been in place since July 2011 and is one of the main systems used throughout the college.

Projects in Progress

The team is in the process of developing a brand new intranet. We operate three intranet systems:

  • Staff
  • Further Education Students
  • Higher Education Students

As part of this re-build, we are planning to build new intranets from the ground up in .NET 4, combining both student intranets into one system with a bespoke content management system (CMS) that will allow students to be identified via Active Directory and displayed content relevant to their student membership status.

Taking a senior/lead role on the development of the student intranet, I am currently researching and learning new techniques and technologies that can make a significant impact to the usability, user experience and flexibility of the data provided. The main technology being utilised within this project are Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) services.

Available Services

I am currently in full-time, permanent employment and therefore cannot take on any major projects at this time. However, please feel free to send me any requests via email and I will endeavour to respond with any availability and quotes.

I also respond to questions, comments, review requests and interview requests (as long as you provide enough details of who you are and the purpose of the request).
